What to serve with chicken pie

The chicken pie is a British classic! And with tender chunks of chicken, a creamy, flavoursome sauce and a buttery, crumbly pastry case to hold it all together, it's no wonder!

While we'd certainly scoff one on its own, when it comes to a sit-down dinner, you might want to add some side dishes to create a filling meal that the whole family can enjoy. You might even want to elevate the humble chicken pie and serve it at a dinner party, in which case your choice of sides will make all the difference.

The great news is that chicken pie goes well with many side dishes, so whatever your tastes and whatever you are looking to do with it, you'll be able to find the perfect accompaniment to serve with your chicken pie that is sure to go down a treat!

Indulge in the irresistible flavours of our chicken pie selection, featuring three mouth-watering options to satisfy your cravings. First, we have the Chip Shop Chicken Curry Pie, a tantalizing blend of tender chicken pieces enveloped in a mild and sweet curry sauce, creating a fusion of comforting flavours that transport you to exotic places. This is the pie Christian won with on Channel 4’s Aldi’s Next Big Thing! For those seeking a classic combination, our Chicken and Mushroom Pie is a timeless choice. Succulent chicken, paired with earthy mushrooms, delivers a delightful experience that never fails to please. And finally, our best-selling pie, the Chicken, Ham and Leek Pie, is a true crowd-pleaser. Packed with savoury chicken, outdoor-reared ham, and the subtle sweetness of leeks, each bite offers a symphony of flavours that warm your heart and leave you yearning for more.

Chicken pies have an uncanny ability to evoke feelings of warmth, nostalgia and contentment. Their comforting aroma, golden pastry, and delicious fillings create a sense of culinary delight and bring a smile to faces around the dinner table. It's no wonder these pies have become an all-time favourite, cherished by individuals and families alike, as they deliver a taste experience that takes people back to their childhood.

Our Favourite Side Dishes to Serve with Chicken Pies

Mashed Potato

Potatoes, potatoes, glorious potatoes! The great thing about them is how versatile they are. You can roast them, mash them, boil them, fry them - have them whichever way you like them best. We think a buttery mash works wonders when served alongside a chicken pie. It's smooth, buttery and slightly salted, making it perfectly paired against the creamy filling and crumbly texture - a match made in heaven!

Carrot and Parsnip Mash

Sweet and succulent and packed full of goodness, carrot and parsnip mash will not disappoint. A great alternative to mashed potatoes, a carrot and parsnip mash gives a warming, earthy flavour, and a sweetness that goes great alongside a hearty, savoury chicken pie.

Pie and chips is a classic meal that has earned its place in the British culinary hall of fame. Hot, salty beer-battered chips are among our favourites, with a crisp outside and fluffy inside that works perfectly with the creamy, meaty chicken pie. They are great for mopping up the sauce too. If you fancy something a little different, southern fried potatoes are a great alternative with their tasty southern-style seasoning!

Green Vegetables

Green vegetables are excellent companions to chicken pies, as they add freshness, colour, and a healthy balance to the meal. Here's a list of green vegetables that pair wonderfully with chicken pies:

  • Peas: sweet and vibrant, peas bring a pop of colour and a burst of natural sweetness that complements the savoury flavours of chicken pies.
  • Broccoli: with its mild bitterness and crisp texture, broccoli adds a satisfying crunch and a nutritious element to the dish.
  • Spinach: tender and versatile, spinach provides a delicate, earthy taste and a vibrant green hue that beautifully contrasts with the golden pastry of the pie.
  • Green Beans: whether blanched or sautéed, green beans offer a satisfying crunch and a subtle sweetness that complements the rich flavours of chicken pies.
  • Asparagus: with its distinct flavour and tender texture, asparagus lends a touch of elegance to the meal. It adds a slightly nutty taste and a beautiful pop of green colour.
  • Brussels Sprouts: when roasted or sautéed, Brussels sprouts become wonderfully caramelized and bring a slightly bitter, yet enjoyable taste to the plate.
  • Courgette: sliced or diced courgette is a versatile vegetable that adds a mild, fresh taste and a hint of moisture to the chicken pie ensemble.

How to store your chicken pie meal

Storing chicken pies in the freezer is a fantastic way to ensure delicious meals are readily available whenever you need them. With a freezer life of up to six months, our chicken pies can be safely stored without compromising taste or quality. Freezing them allows you to plan ahead and have a satisfying, just-like-home-cooked meal on hand, even on busy days or for unexpected visitors.

And freezing your chicken pies with side dishes is a clever strategy to have a complete and well-rounded meal up your sleeve! Whether it's mashed potatoes, peas or chips, freezing the accompanying side dishes alongside the pies ensures a hassle-free dining experience is at your fingertips.
