Most Popular Pie Fillings
When it comes to choosing a pie, the options are endless. There are so many different mouth-watering flavours to choose from that you really are spoilt for choice! There is nothing more satisfying and comforting than tucking into a pie, whether as a quick bite on the go or sitting down to a proper pie-based dinner with piping hot gravy and delicious, perfectly matched side dishes. A hot pie, where a delightful, flavoursome filling is encased in a perfectly cooked melt-in-your-mouth, butter-rich pastry, is just the thing to keep us feeling warm and full - particularly on these colder autumnal days.
People have been eating pies for hundreds of years, and in that time, we've managed to perfect the fillings so that there really is something for everyone to enjoy. So whether you are a traditionalist or an adventurer, a meat-lover or vegetarian, want something light and fresh, or hearty and sumptuous - we've got the perfect pie for you.
To get your mouth watering and stomach rumbling, let's take a look at some of the most popular fillings for pies to date.
Popular pie fillings for all taste buds!
Steak and Kidney
Why mess with perfection? Steak and kidney pies have been eaten since the 1600s. It's a classic comfort food option and is a staple on many British pub menus. Our version is prepared with the finest quality, locally sourced organic steak, combined with ox kidney and simmered gently in red wine to create a rich gravy. All of this is encased in our signature shortcrust pastry making for a hearty, savoury mouthful every time you bite.
Cheese and Onion
You can't go wrong with a classic cheese and onion pie. This pie filling is perfect for a quick lunch or dressed up with some delicious side dishes to make an impressive evening meal. Buttery pastry and tangy cheese are a match made in heaven. We pack ours with mature cheddar, Red Leicester and add a glug of locally-sourced cider and a sprinkling of chives - no wonder it achieved a silver medal at the British Pie Awards 2021.
Chicken and Mushroom
The combination of sweet, succulent chicken and earthy mushrooms has been a favourite of many a Briton over the years. When you add a few cheeky extras, such as a creamy white wine sauce, and then encase the whole lot in a gorgeous butter-rich pastry, you know you are onto a winner.
Chip Shop Chicken Curry
British people love a good curry, and they love a good pie. So when you combine the two as we did with our award-winning chip shop chicken curry pie you know that it's going to be a popular choice! Generous chunks of British free-range chicken lovingly prepared in a sweet, mild curry sauce make this pie one of the best around.
Squash, Spinach and Feta Pie
Sometimes we all like to try something a little different, and in recent years we've noticed that less traditional pie filling flavours are starting to increase in popularity. For vegetarians and vegans, the range of pie options used to be pretty small. Now there are plenty of great flavours and fillings to choose from. Soft sweet squash, tangy crumbly feta cheese and fresh spinach make for a tastebud tantalising combination that's going to impress vegans, vegetarians, and meat-eaters alike. For our version, we've added some sweet and mild chilli and tomato sauce and created our vegan pastry using Umami and soya milk to ensure crisp, flaky perfection- just as it should be.
